Self-advocacy playbook

Due to our health culture and systems, we can find ourselves outsourcing our well-being. This can feel like being semi-confident about an issue until a doctor tells us, “Oh, this is nothing. It’s typical of …..”

In public health, our systems work off statistical averages and ranges. When we show up to discuss our needs, we’re measured against a range of what’s considered normal. Once we realize how data is used to support our health, we can see how generalized datasets can miss our unique experiences.

Another way the system can be challenging is timed visits (often restricted to 10 minutes) to connect with our health care professionals. When we’re dealing with confusing side effects, or need to adjust dosages, or obtain referrals to specialists, this can add up to feelings of overwhelm and stress.

Stacey Perlin will discuss how daily journalling can help with this and provide an easy-to-use journal/planning template to help you track relevant information and improve your working relationships with health care professionals.
